Origins and Early History
Villa Cimbrone stands on a rocky promontory overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea in Ravello, a jewel of the Amalfi Coast. Its origins date back to the 11th century, when the noble Acconciajoco family constructed the first core of the estate. During the Middle Ages, it served as a fortified residence, blending agricultural activity with aristocratic leisure. Over the centuries, the villa became known for its breathtaking position and terraced gardens, admired by travelers and scholars alike. Its early architecture reflected a mix of Arab, Sicilian, and Norman influences typical of the Amalfi Republic’s golden age.
The English Renaissance Revival
In the early 20th century, Villa Cimbrone entered a new chapter when it was purchased by Ernest William Beckett, an English nobleman later known as Lord Grimthorpe. Captivated by Ravello’s romantic charm, Beckett transformed the decaying structure into a grand villa inspired by the English Arts and Crafts movement. He redesigned the gardens, enriched the property with classical statues, and added architectural elements reminiscent of Gothic, Moorish, and Renaissance styles. His vision turned Villa Cimbrone into an eclectic masterpiece — a celebration of art, culture, and nature harmoniously intertwined.
A Haven for Artists and Intellectuals
Throughout the 20th century, Villa Cimbrone became a retreat for writers, artists, and thinkers seeking inspiration amid its tranquil beauty. It hosted legendary figures such as Virginia Woolf, D.H. Lawrence, Greta Garbo, and Winston Churchill, who praised its serenity and sweeping coastal views. The villa’s Terrace of Infinity, lined with marble busts overlooking the sea, became an icon of Mediterranean elegance. During this period, Villa Cimbrone was not only a luxurious residence but also a cultural salon, where ideas and creativity flourished against a backdrop of timeless beauty.
Villa Cimbrone Today
Today, Villa Cimbrone is one of Ravello’s most prestigious landmarks, functioning as a five-star hotel and an exclusive venue for events and weddings. Its gardens, open to the public, remain among the most celebrated in Italy, blending classical sculptures with exotic plants and panoramic vistas. Carefully preserved and restored, the villa continues to embody the fusion of history, art, and nature envisioned by its creators. Visitors from around the world come to experience its ethereal atmosphere — a living testament to centuries of cultural evolution on the Amalfi Coast.

Ravello is a timeless, enchanting town where the historic center is completely pedestrian-only. No cars or scooters circulate here. You will arrive at a drop-off point (usually Piazza Duomo), and from there continue on foot to your hotel or venue.
Yes. Ravello rests high above the Amalfi Coast, and part of its charm lies in its stairways, cobblestone paths, and gentle climbs and descents. Every step reveals a new view, whether of the sea, the gardens, or the winding streets.
No need to worry—most hotels offer porter service. Upon your arrival, porters will meet you and ensure your luggage is taken safely to your room.
Absolutely. Ravello is a compact town, and everything is within a short walking distance. Do keep in mind, however, that some paths involve steps or slopes.
Ravello is welcoming to all, though strollers and wheelchairs can be challenging on stairs and cobblestones. Families often find baby carriers more practical, and hotels are always happy to assist guests with reduced mobility.
For exploring the town, we recommend comfortable flat shoes or sandals with good support. For wedding celebrations, if you would like to wear heels, consider wedges or block heels—stylish yet practical for Ravello’s charming stone streets.
May is one of the loveliest months to be in Ravello. Days are usually warm and sunny, with average temperatures between 18–24°C (65–75°F). Evenings can be a little cooler, so we suggest bringing a light jacket or wrap for comfort.
